•  What should I look for when choosing Double glazing or replacement windows?
This is always a popular question and it is always the longest to answer....Probably the most important issue is to select a reliable and efficient company to do the job for you. If you are lucky enough to find someone by recommendation from a friend or neighbour, you're almost home and dry - but what if you can't? Do you go for the nationally known (and expensive) 'Big Names' or trust to luck with someone out of the local freeads?
Like anything in life, you get what you pay for - the big companies are pretty much guaranteed to do a good job with good quality materials and back up - however all that national newspaper and TV advertising has to be paid for and while you will get a certain peace of mind with a big player, you may well pay more than you have to for the job.
Our own research showed a price difference of over 250% between a local firm and a major national company....while some of this difference might be due to higher quality materials and snappier fitting, you have to decide whether you think this level of extra cost is worth it...Whatever option you choose however, make sure you follow the do's and dont's below...It's not a comprhensive list but it'll certainly help you in the right direction.

Do’s   Dont’s
Get a minimum of three quotes. Don't be scared to ask for a discount or extras - They want your business. If you want free stained glass or a cat door fitted - ask!
Ask to see examples of previous work that the company has carried out. If there are some in your local area - take a look
Read the quote carefully and make sure it covers everything you've discussed - Are all the windows you want to open marked as opening? - What kind of reinstatement to decor is offered? - Is VAT included - Who's going to put the curtain rails back up?
Check any guarantee thoroughly - a guarantee is worthless if the company goes bust unless it's backed by an insurance company.

Shop around for credit - If you are buying your replacement windows or conservatory on credit, check the APR - Would a loan be cheaper?

Go with the first company to give you a price for the work before you've had a chance to compare prices and specifications.

Pay more than a nominal deposit before the work has started. Double Glazing companies can and do go bust!
Let yourself be pressured into signing up with anyone by 'super discounts' or deals that 'are only available today' . You'll almost certainly get the same or even a better deal if you play a waiting game.

Sign any document unless you've read it thoroughly and understand all the terms. If it's a credit agreement remember you are allowed a 'cooling off' period if it was signed in your home.

Pay for the job untill you are happy with it - Inspect the installation - Remember - it's easier to get someone to fix things if you still owe them money...
