• Wood or Upvc?
Good quality wood doors can age well and enhance the look of your property. Wood has a warm, natural look and a texture that many prefer, however, wood is vulnerable to the elements. Mahogany and white pine woods are good stable woods for doors, whereas others, such as oak, although very attractive can be prone to warping and will need careful treatment. Having said that, modern treatments mean that a wooden door will not need to be painted or varnished as often as they used to be.
Warping and cracking is a potential risk with exterior doors due to the differences between interior and exterior temperatures. Cheap wooden doors can also come apart at the joints and can be open to rot - especially through the exposed end grain at the bottom of the stiles. It is therefore vital to seal the edges of all wooden doors.
The major liability of wood is decay, but it remains an attractive material for a front door and with careful sealing and correct usage of oil, varnish or paint, it can last for many years.
